Little Libraries

Today the fabulous Kerry Hammond takes us on a tour of little libraries...

I am a huge fan of not only books, but of libraries. I visit my local Denver Library branch about 3 or 4 times a week to drop off or pick up books. One day while driving home from work, I spotted what looked like a birdhouse in front of a home down the street from where I live. It was quite large for a birdhouse and located pretty close to the sidewalk. Upon further inspection (on a later walk through the neighborhood) I realized that the little house was full of books.

These little neighborhood libraries have popped up all over Denver and when I did a little research I found that they were started by a man in Wisconsin in 2009 and are called Little Free Library. Their mission is to promote literacy and build a sense of community.

The one that started it all actually looked like a mini one room schoolhouse. Some of the libraries that I have seen around town have become very elaborate and creative. One that is two blocks from my office is a miniature version of the Castle Marne B&B it stands in front of. I actually picked up a Lillian Jackson Braun book from this location when I was in need of reading material one day at lunchtime.

What a great way to share reading with the community!
