Friday Drinks with Reads: Midnight and The Baby Guinness

Midnight, a Kirkus Best Book of 2013, is a noir-ish thriller based on a simple premise: when a judge dies, his staff keep their jobs until the end of that calendar year. So when Judge Alvin Canter quietly expires in his chambers on the morning of New Year’s Eve, his clerk and secretary face unemployment by close of business. Neither can afford to lose their job. Tom Carroway, the clerk, is secretly in debt to a loan shark who bailed him out of substantial gambling losses. Carol Scilingo, the secretary, is a single mom who also supports her own ailing mother. Together they concoct a deceptively simple plan – smuggle Judge Canter’s body out of the courthouse to make it look like he died at home and after the critical hour of midnight. The plan seems to work – until it doesn’t. And so begin three days of increasingly complicated problems and rapidly accelerating danger.

You may need a drink.

And now Kevin tells us how to concoct the perfect drink to keep you going while Tom and Carol watch their lives fall apart around them.

“The drink I chose for Midnight is the Baby Guinness. To prepare this drink you need:

Kahlua
Bailey’s Irish Cream (or a reasonable facsimile)
Shot glass
Spoon
Steady hands.

“Fill the shot glass halfway with Kahlua, then carefully layer on the Bailey’s by pouring it slowly over an inverted spoon. The result is a tiny replica of a pint of Guinness, hence the name.

“The drink has a reasonably bright surface and a dark underside, which, come to think of it, accurately describes Tom Carroway.”
