Q&A with Joe Hart, Author of The Last Girl

Today we have a Q&A with Joe Hart, author of THE LAST GIRL. And we're giving away a copy of Joe's book. To enter, put your name in the comments here or on our Facebook page.  (US Residents Only)

Where did you get the idea for this book? How did you know that was the book you wanted to write?

The idea came to me one day while thinking about the fragility of the human race as a species, how helpless we are at times to combat disease as well as genetic abnormalities. Questioning what if something caused women to stop being born, how long would humankind survive was extremely intriguing. Of course the ramifications of women being in such short number was a great jumping off point for a larger look at social commentary in our society today. After a few weeks of mulling the idea over I just knew it wasn’t going to go away.

What was the last mystery novel you read, other than your own, that you LOVED? Why did you love it?

The last mystery/thriller that I absolutely adored was Dark Matter by Blake   Crouch. Blake’s one of my favorite authors and I was really lucky to get an advance copy. Blake has an absolute knack for creating nearly unbearable tension within a mind-bending plot, and Dark Matter is no exception. At its center the book is a love story surrounded by a mystery/thriller/sci-fi hybrid that doesn’t slow down from the very first page. I’ll say it now; Dark Matter will be the biggest book of the year.

If you could meet any author alive or dead, who would it be and why?

If I could meet any author it would have to be Stephen King. He is basically the reason I’m a writer today and really I’d just like to thank him for all the inspiration and entertainment he’s provided over the years.

Do you share any traits with your protagonist? Which traits?

Zoey, my main character in The Last Girl, and I share the devotion to the people we care about. My family is the most important thing in the world to me, and just like Zoey, I’d do anything for them.
