Homework Before Star Trek Into Darkness

On May 17th the latest installment in the Star Trek franchise will hit theaters in the U.S. (some other countries will get it before us.) So for low-key to moderate Star Trek fan it's time to brush up on your Trek a little.

I admit I like Star Trek. I like it a lot. But I am not a super fan. I've never been to a convention. I don't speak Klingon. I cannot recite any dialogue beyond, "Beam me up, Scotty." And probably the most alienating aspect of my Star Trek interest is that my favorite iteration of the series has always been Deep Space Nine. Not a popular position with super-trekkies.

But I do love the original Trek characters and I loved them in the first J.J. Abrams re-boot. And I familiar enough with the characters to get a lot of the hidden pleasures throughout J.J. Abrams first Star Trek. So if you are like me, and you like Star Trek but don't know absolutely everything about it, you might want to re-watch the first one before you see the second. Think of it as your Star Trek homework.

We did it and had a great time. I even noticed that Kirk's mother is the same actress who plays Emma Swan on Once Upon a Time. And now we are totally prepared to see Kirk and Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC's Sherlock) duke it out in the sequel.
