Book Review: A Penny for the Hangman & Giveaway

A Penny For The Hangman was extremely hard to put down and one of the most intriguing books I’ve read this year. It begins in the present day, on the Caribbean Island of St. Thomas. Journalist Karen Tyler has been invited to the island by a mysterious stranger who promises to give her the scoop of her lifetime. The scoop relates to a crime that occurred 50 years ago on the island. Two young boys from wealthy families were convicted of the brutal murders of their parents. The two boys have been released from prison and Hollywood is about to release a movie that portrays the events that led to one of the most notorious crimes the island has ever seen.

Karen follows the mysterious man’s instructions and has come to the island alone. She is sure that the man is one of the two boys who was convicted of the crime and is determined to get the story. Her story of a lifetime quickly turns into something else entirely and she finds herself alone and struggling to understand the truth of what happened 50 years ago, and how she can possibly make it out alive to tell the tale.

Author Tom Savage

The way the story is told is very unique and adds to the suspense. Without giving too much away, the story is supplemented with Karen’s articles, letters written between those involved in the original crime, and journal entries. The way the author brings all of the information to the reader makes it even more mysterious and makes for an exciting unraveling of events.

I really enjoyed this book. The original crime is written so well, I kept thinking it really happened and that a true crime story was intertwined into the fictional present day one. The author does a wonderful job of building the suspense and creating a set of circumstances to keep any reader up until the wee hours. The plot was very unique and the writing was excellent. The twists and turns as all the secrets are revealed will keep you guessing.
