Crafty Thursdays: Herb Gardens

This week's craft is Herb Gardens in honor of the classic english mystery TV show, Rosemary and Thyme from 2007. Rosemary Boxer and Laura Thyme are love to garden and also find themselves embroiled in solving the occasional crime.

This craft is relatively easy and the results look great. We made four of them in about an hour and they make great gifts. Here are the materials you'll need:

  • Pots or containers - we got ours at Goodwill and we looked for containers that were visually interesting - like the star cake pan, the cow cookie jar and the tin basket. All were less than $7.
  • Your herbs - you can grow these from seedlings or cuttings or cheat like we did, and buy the little plants
  • Potting soil - you can also use some from the garden, our soil here is so filled with clay that we get special potting soil.
  • Water
  • Drainage material - rocks, pumice, etc.
  • Gardening trowel
  • A small piece of screening - if you're using a traditional pot with a hole at the bottom, rather than one of our creative make shift pots.

Step One:
Fill your container with the drainage material. If you use a regular pot you'll want to cover the hole with a piece of screening so the drainage material doesn't fall out.

Step Two:
Add some dirt but down't fill the container all the way up. Dig holes in the dirt where you want your herbs. We put three little plants in this star container.

Step Three:
Separate your plants from the containers they come in. Loosen the roots a little on your first plants by gently massaging the dirt around the roots.

Step Four:
Put your plants into the holes you dug, one by one.

Step Five:
Water your plants and you're done. When you need some of the herb for cooking, just take a little at a time. If the plants eventually get too big for the pot, then you can plant them outside. Look at all of the great herb gardens we made:
