Drinks with Reads: The Willful Child & Klingon Blood Wine

Gerald So joins us today from the Five-Two Crime Poetry blog to match the Star Trek parody by Steven Erikson, Willfull Child, with what else...Klingon Blood Wine. Qapla'!  your done reading his review, check out the poetry blog tour that's going on over at the Five -Two

WILLFUL CHILD by Steven Erikson, published in the U.S. by Tor Books, was my favorite read of 2014. It's a rollicking Star Trek parody that provokes thought along the way.

In pursuit of smugglers, the starship Willful Child is commandeered by a powerful A.I. to search out its maker. Raised on Star Trek reruns by his grandfather, who made first contact with extraterrestrials, Captain Hadrian Alan Sawback is irreverent, impetuous, and inappropriate. He's also adventurous, open-minded, and clever enough to take on the moody A.I.

I hadn't read Erikson's other books, but his background as an archaeologist, anthropologist, and Star Trek fan was enough for me to jump aboard. Like Sawback, I was eager to explore the space and time Erikson thought up as the novel unfolded episodically.

At one point, Captain Sawback fends off a mutinous crew member with a bottle of Macallan. That inspired me to pair WILLFUL CHILD with a recipe for Klingon bloodwine, seen on Star Trek: The Next Generation and said to be twice as potent as whisky. I found the recipe on the Geek Twins blog:

Ingredients:
1 oz. Rum, spiced (Captain Morgan's)
1 oz. Tequila, gold (Jose Cuervo Especial)
Fill with Cranberry Juice
1 dash Grenadine
2 dashes Tabasco Sauce

Mixing Instructions:
Add Tabasco sauce to an ice-filled beer mug or glass.
Pour in the tequila, rum and grenadine, and fill with cranberry juice.

Shake twice and serve.

Tip: Sweeten to your own taste with Welch’s pure dark grape juice. Blend up some strawberries or raspberries to give it a thicker consistency.
