Beat to a Pulp
The mystery e-zine website, Beat to a Pulp, features a crime fiction short story every single week. The stories are fabulous and free.
Recent authors have included Patti Abbot, Cathi Stoler, and Gerald So.
This week's featured story is called, Bobby Wycoff is Dead, and it's by Terrie Farley Moran, author of The Awareness and Other Deadly Tales.
Here's how Bobby Wycoff is Dead starts:
Bobby Wycoff Is Dead
Terrie Farley Moran
"Bobby Wycoff is dead." Mama came into the kitchen ripping and tearing at the morning mail. "Coffee ready?"
I pointed to the oversized pink and green flowery mug I'd set out on the counter. "You got a letter about Bobby Wycoff? He die in Chicago?"
"Nope. Elsa Gurney pulled up while I was emptying the mailbox. Seems Bobby never run off to Chicago like we thought. Coupla kids grappling down at Moon Lake caught a body in their hooks. Likely scared them half to death. What's left of the body is wearing Bobby's old leather boots, the ones sporting the big W brand on each side. That was enough for old 'Gossip Gurney' to spread the news like Paul Revere. I bet she isn't even going anywhere in that big old Chevy of hers. Just driving up and down the streets stopping every time she sees a living, breathing body to tell 'em 'bout the dead one."
