Novel T-Shirts

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

I love these book inspired t-shirts with designs that are literally made from the words of entire novels. They are made by a company called Litographs located in Cambridge, Mass. One of the company founders, Danny Fein, answered a few questions for us about their unique book art.

Mystery Playground: What inspired you to make artwork out of books?

Danny: We started out with Litographs posters, and I was inspired to make those because it was exactly the type of artwork I wanted in my new apartment.  Now we are up to almost 120 titles, so there is something for everyone.  Our posters go as large as 52x78, so that we can fit every word of each book on at least 1 size.  With our t-shirts, we estimate that most contain between 25k - 75k words, depending on the size and design.

Agatha Christies' The Secret Adversary

Mystery Playground: What were the first books you tried?

Danny: Our first 7 books were Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, On the Origin of Species, Da Vinci's Notebooks, White Fang, Peter Pan, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and Kama Sutra.

Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories

Mystery Playground: How do you select the novels you will work with in the future?

Danny: Most of our titles are in the public domain, but we're now beginning to work with contemporary authors to license their work and turn it into Litographs.  We want to work with every author, and we're in the process of developing systems that will make it possible for us to do so.
