Where did you get the idea for Small Town Spin?
The idea for this book grew from the setting, and a long-standing joke with my best girlfriend. Gwynn's Island is a beautiful little hidden gem on the Chesapeake Bay, and my friend Julie grew up there. It's about an hour and a half from Richmond. She rarely runs across anyone here who's ever heard of it.
I grew up in Texas, hundreds and hundreds of miles away, and I meet people in Richmond who are from the Dallas/Fort Worth area all. The. Time. Really. I got pulled over one day and was chatting with the officer (sweet guy, used to work K-9) and it turned out his parents live in the next town over from where I grew up. I could give you forty more examples.
Years ago, my friend and I were talking about this phenomenon, and I told her if I ever got a book deal, I'd set a novel in Mathews County. This one is it. We had such fun going on research trips. I fudged a few things, but tried to stay true to the beauty and spirit of the island. It's a lovely place.
What is the best thing that has happened to you as a result of your novels?
Meeting readers who love Nichelle, and seeing my little ones be as proud of me as I always am of them. That's pretty darned cool.
If your protagonist was actually a real person, would you be friends with them? Why or why not?
Absolutely! I would love to grab a glass of wine with Nichelle. And go shoe shopping with her. She's friendly and smart and witty—I think she'd be a great friend.
What can you tell us about your next book?
It starts with a gruesome murder in a super-creepy location I had a lot of fun scouting out. And an exclusive Nichelle can't walk away from, no matter who tells her to stay clear. Look for DEVIL IN THE DEADLINE in January 2015.
How did being a journalist prepare you to be a writer?
In so many ways, but I think the best preparation I got for writing a series is the ability to write when I need to and work on deadline, the ability to tune out background noise while I work (the receptionists used to have to come to my office and put a hand between my face and my screen to get me to answer calls. I'm pretty good at that.), and a pretty thick skin.
