Judy Bolton & The Old Fashioned

Judy Bolton started her life of crime solving in a book called The Vanishing Shadow by Margaret Sutton in 1932. A contemporary of Nancy Drew, Judy was not as popular, although with an original series run of thirty-eight books she certainly had her day.

Judy differs from Nancy in that she has a choice between two suitors for the first ten books and then she choses to marry one of them in book ten. She also experiences more self-doubt than Nancy.

This Judy Bolton book belongs to Ingrid Willis

We chose to pair this book, The Voice in the Suitcase with an Old Fashioned, because well, Judy is a bit old fashioned.

We got our Old Fashioned recipe from About.com where you can find many other wonderful recipes, etc.

The Old-fashioned is a classic whiskey cocktail that has been served since around 1880 at the Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky and is (disputably) the first drink referred to as a cocktail. It is the perfect ideal of what a cocktail should contain: a spirit, a sweet, a bitter, a sour, and water.

Typically, the Old-fashioned is made with bourbon, however you can experiment with other types of whiskey. Club soda is often used to top off this drink, but this is not a traditional method. There are also other ways to change up this drink and a few of those are listed below the recipe.

  1. I've never heard of this series. I'll have to watch garage sales for them! The drink sounds good too.
