Drinks with Reads: Mimosas on the Beach

Author Eva Gates joins us today on Drinks with Reads to tell us about her new book, By Book or by Crook and to match it with the perfect drink...

By Book or By Crook is the first in the Lighthouse Library series from Penguin Obsidian. The books are set in a library in a historic lighthouse, and feature Lucy Richardson, highly reluctant sleuth.
Lucy Richardson was born and raised in Boston but her mother was from Nags Head, and Lucy has spent every summer of her life on the Outer Banks. To her, the area is synonymous with sun, sand, and relaxation. It means Vacation!
When she left her long-long-long time boyfriend on bended knee with a small blue box in his hand and fled into the night, the natural place for Lucy to go was Nags Head and into the arms of her favorite aunt. She planned to spend the summer lazing about on the beach while deciding what to do with the rest of her life. But Lucy’s Aunt Ellen isn’t one for letting anyone laze about, and before Lucy knew what was happening, Ellen had invited her best friend, who just happens to be the director of the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library, to tea. By the time tea was over, Lucy found herself with a new job.
So these days Lucy doesn’t have all that much time for the pool or even for relaxing with a refreshing drink, not with her new job in the Lighthouse Library, extra busy this summer with a special exhibit of a complete collection of Jane Austen first editions. Particularly not now that the chair of the library board has been murdered in the rare book room, and the precious Austens are being stolen, one at a time.
Lucy may be working, and it may be winter in the northern hemisphere, but there’s no reason you can’t sit back with a drink and a copy of By Book or By Crook, and imagine you’re in the Outer Banks lazing about the pool on summer vacation.
And nothing says summer vacation and relaxation better than a morning Mimosa.
The thing about a morning drink is that you don’t want anything complicated. This is not the time to get out the blender or the ice crusher, various bitters and slices of fruit. All you want is pour and sip. And sip again.
The perfect drink for that vacation in the sun.
Mimosa
Best quality orange juice you can find, chilled
Champagne or other sparkling wine, chilled

Take a champagne flute, and half fill with orange juice.
Slowly fill glass to the top with sparkling wine.

As the morning progresses, less and less orange juice might be needed.
