The Eight by Katherine Neville

"On the fourth day of the fourth month, then will come The Eight."

One of my favorite books of all time is The Eight by Katherine Neville. It has everything - romance, revolution, history, nuns, multiple timelines, art, intrigue, family and chess. It's this fabulous book that runs in two time periods - revolutionary France and the 1970s and follows the history of a chess set that once belonged to Charlemagne.

There are eight main characters for each time period that represent different pieces of a chess game. But even if you've never played chess or even dislike chess, the story is worth the read. You'll run into famous historical figures like Catherine the Great, Robespierre, Napolean, and many more. I love the strong female characters, but what will keep you reading is the plot.

One of the sayings in the book is "On the fourth day or the fourth month, then will come The Eight." We since that's today - April 4th, I thought there'd be no better time to gush about this book.
