Crime & Beyond Book Club Reads Chelsea Cain

Kerry Hammond reports to Mystery Playground today from the most recent meeting of the Denver-based Crime & Beyond Book Club.

Crime & Beyond met this month to discuss One Kick, the first book in a new series by Chelsea Cain. Our book club discovered Chelsea Cain years ago when we stumbled across Heartsick, which introduced us to Archie Sheridan and Gretchen Lowell. Archie being a mild mannered police officer, and Gretchen the female serial killer who abducts and tortures him. This month we read the first book in a new series by the author, and we are already anticipating the publication of book two.

One Kick featured Kick Lannigan, a 21 year-old who was abducted at a young age and held for five years by a child pornographer. As can be expected, Kick is one messed up adult. She has taught herself every kind of self-defense imaginable, in addition to how to be proficient with numerous weapons. She is obsessed with cases of abducted children and when a man named John Bishop, a wealthy former arms dealer, approaches her to help him find a missing boy, she is unable to say no. In helping Bishop, Kick finds herself drawn back to her past and confronting demons both past and present.

Our book club gave this book rave reviews. The writing was excellent and the characters were well-developed and diverse. The subject matter was disturbing, and I think it made many of us crave justice that much more. Without giving anything away, I can say that the end of the book was not only an end, but an opening for book two to fill in more of the story. We enjoyed questioning and analyzing the characters and the events in the story. I think Ms. Cain will answer many of our questions in Kick Back, which is due out in January of 2016. I only hope we can wait that long.
