Crafty Thursdays: Book Shelf Table Runner Quilt

Dru Ann Love, from Dru's Book Musings, is visiting Mystery Playground today to tell us how to make this wonderful Book Shelf Table Runner Quilt, complete with author autographs. Dru Ann makes all kinds of quilts and you can see her other creations here, and last year she shared her Nancy Drew Quilt with us.

Materials & Tools:
16 different fabric materials – use for books
One-quarter yard of natural muslin –use for background
One-half yard of brown backing material – use for bookcase
One-half yard of batting
Cutting mat
Quilting ruler
Rotary cutter
Basting spray
Pins

Step 1
Everything starts out as yards of fabric and tools.

Step 2
Cut 16 pieces of fabric that range in sizes from 5 inch to 9.5 inches in height and 2.5 inches wide.  These are your books.

Step 3
Cut the muslin fabric that is 2.5 inches wide and the appropriate length for the 16 individual of fabric books, so that when stitched together it will measure 11 inches in height. These are your books with the shelf background.

Step 4
Next stitch the 16 book/shelf pieces together varying the height so that it resembles books on bookshelf.  The first group to stitch is the books that are lying on its side.  Then stitch the standing books together to form two separate pieces.

Step 5
Stitch the two separate pieces together and then add the bookshelf top and bottom and the sides to create the top quilt.

Step 6
Take the top piece of the quilt to book signings or a convention with your favorite authors. Get them to sign some of the books on the quilt.

Step 7
Place top quilt with batting in the middle on top of the backing material.  This is known as the quilt sandwich. You can either pin or use basting spray to keep all three pieces together.

After you’ve stitched all three pieces (top quilt, batting and backing) together and bind the quilt, your bookshelf table runner is complete. It should measure 13 x 39 inches when complete.

Come back next Thursday for another great craft.
