Magic Color Flair: The World of Mary Blair

Captain Hook and Tiger Lily

Mary Blair was an artist who worked for Walt Disney and did many concept sketches for characters and rides we know and love. The Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco's Presidio is featuring an exhibit of Mary Blair's work - both Disney and non-Disney - until September 7th.

In the photo above you can see a concept piece she did for Peter Pan imagining Captain Hook and Tiger Lily. Below Peter Pan and Wendy  are with the mermaids and Wendy doesn't look so happy about it.

The photos below show concept drawings for Alice in Wonderland

Mary was key to the design and development of the iconic Disney ride, It's A Small World. Below is a collage she made to help imagine the ride. Even in this early stage you get the feel of the facade of the Disneyland version of the ride here.

Here are early prototypes of two of the dolls in Small World. The penguin is my favorite.

It's a Small World Concept Art

If you can't make the exhibit but still want to see more of Mary Blair's artwork, these fabulous books have her fabulous concept drawings as illustrations.

  1. We just took my daughter to Disney for the first time and It's a Small World was her favor. What a cool exhibit to see.
