Kerry Hammond is here today to review the first book in the Huntress FBI thriller series by Alexandra Sokoloff.
Huntress Moon is Book One in a new series by Alexandra Sokoloff featuring a tough yet compassionate FBI agent, and a female serial killer. The book, published by Thomas & Mercer, came out in January of 2015. The second in the series, Blood Moon, was released in February, and the third, Cold Moon, in May of this year. I was intrigued by the author’s new FBI series because I had read several of her Haunted thrillers and loved every one of them. I actually listened to Huntress Moon on audio. I am a big fan of audio books, and this production was well done. The narrator, R.C. Bray, was new to me, and did an excellent job.
The story opens with an undercover FBI agent who has requested a meeting. The reader is thrown right into the action as the undercover agent steps off the curb and is killed by a passing car right in front of the person sent to meet him, Special Agent Matthew Roarke. Immediately before the accident, Roarke swears he saw a woman say something to the undercover agent, causing him to turn before stepping in front of the car. The woman disappears before he can question her, and the incident starts a hunt for the woman that uncovers the fact that someone exactly like her was noticed at the scenes of other “accidents.” These sightings cover a span of years and Roarke is determined to find out who she is and whether or not she is a serial killer.
This book drew me in immediately, and continued non-stop until the end. I wanted to learn more about the mysterious woman as much as Roarke did, and I loved the way the author alternated with chapters from her perspective. The reader was able to get her side of things, and the backstory was disclosed slowly and deliberately, hooking me even more. I was reminded of Chelsea Cain’s female serial Killer, Gretchen Lowell, but as much as I like Gretchen, the character in Huntress Moon drew me to her side.
Alexandra Sokoloff’s FBI series is just as well written as her other books. It takes a lot of skill to make a serial killer compassionate. We might all love Dexter, but not many of us would invite him to dinner. I look forward to the other books in the series.
