Scrimp Scampi and Donna Leon

Today we're matching food with a novel -- Ray's Fabulous Scrimp Scampi. It's an easy to prepare dinner that you can put together quickly -- leaving you plenty of time for reading.

We paired this delightful pasta recipe with Donna Leon's standalone novel, The Jewels of Paradise. I first discovered Donna Leon's novels while traveling in Europe looking for something to read. Her mysteries, set in Venice, we're available in every country I visited.

In this one, Catherine Pellegrini, a native Venetian moved to Manchester, England because of a job opportunity, but wants to come back home. She takes a job in Venice, but perhaps she made her decision hastily, because nothing is what it seems.

The Jewel of the Paradise is a great book to become acquainted with Leon's novels, which do a wonderful job of transporting the reader to Venice.

Here's the recipe:

  • One pound of scrimp
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • quarter teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • Quarter cup lemon juice
  • 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan
  • 8 ounces of Angel Hair Pasta

Melt butter and olive oil on medium heat, add garlic and saute one minute.

Add the shrimp and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Saute five minutes, or until pink, flipping over half way through. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

While shrimp is cooking boil Angel Hair pasta according to package directions. Once cook, drain noodles and put in a mixing bowl, pour shrimp over the top, add lemon juice, parsley and pepper flakes. Toss. Top with cheese and serve.
